Why I joined The One Movement (Kathryn Kellogg, Going Zero Waste)

Let’s take the clock back. It was 8 months ago - February, 2020. (you honestly can’t tell me that I’m the only one who feels like February was an actual lifetime ago)

Anyways, my husband I binge watched Locke & Key on Netflix one weekend which is excellent by the way.

A few days later I received a DM from one of the actors - Petrice Jones. What a coincidence! Was it a weird space time continuum thing? Are there really magical keys floating around in the universe? Or was it just fate?

Petrice became really passionate about reducing single-use plastics specifically on set. If you’re familiar with the entertainment industry, then you know sets are chock full of them.

I went to school for musical theatre and have been in enough commercials, films, and modeling shoots to know that craft services is full of single-use plastics, paper plates, and water bottles. So many water bottles.

And, the worst part about all the water bottles on set is that they’re scattered everywhere, and 98% of them are half full. People will grab a bottle, take a few drinks, and leave it somewhere to be forgotten. It’s infuriating.

Petrice and I bonded over our love of theatre and hate of single-use plastics. The more we became friends he began to tell me about his new business venture the One Movement

But, before we jump into the present, let’s rewind again.

I accidentally became “sustainable” when I was a full-time professional actor. Musical theatre doesn’t pay super great and I was interested in frugal living. Come to find out many of the changes I was making weren’t only better for my wallet they were also better for my health and the health of the planet.

I was absolutely hooked and started writing about these simple swaps on my blog goingzerowaste.com

After a year, things really started to take off. Before I knew it, I was being covered by every major news outlet and National Geographic asked me to be their spokesperson for plastic free living.

Shortly after, I was approached by a small Canadian startup, Pela, to run their social media and handle their content creation.

I lept at the chance to do something I was super passionate about and under my guidance, their IG grew from 60,000 - 560,000 in just two years.

At the same time Going Zero Waste was blossoming. I was being hired to host events, be a spokesperson, speak, and consult for startups all the way to fortune 500 companies.

I left Pela in March to pursue more consulting and speaking opportunities, and clearly the universe had a plan because not even a week later Petrice asked me if I would be the Chief Sustainability Officer of The One Movement.

With a title like that, how could I say no?

My job within the company is to make sure that we’re creating an incredibly sustainable and ethical product that I personally would be proud to own and talk about on goingzerowaste.com.

One of my major goals is to also move beyond product and focus on education. I want to mobilize The One Movement audience into creating daily habits that are better for the planet, and I know Petrice is on the same page. I can’t wait to see what we’re going to create together with The One Movement.
